The name of the godless man comes to nothing; it will be wiped out.
A great name will surely remain longer than a thousand treasures of gold.
A life lasts only a short while, but both righteousness and false shame
will remain with a name.
Hiding wisdom and burying treasure – what profit are either of these?
So, be ashamed of these things listed here:
Men often feel ashamed when it is not necessary to.
Be ashamed of fornication before your father and mother, and of lies before princes and lords.
Be ashamed of offenses before judges and rulers, and of violating the law before the congregation and the people.
Be ashamed of being disloyal to a neighbor or friend, and of stealing from your neighbors.
Be ashamed of changing oaths or contracts, and of leaning on your elbow while eating.
Be ashamed of falsehood in rendering accounts,
and of not being thankful when others greet you.
Be ashamed of looking after whores, and of turning your face from a kinsman.
Be ashamed of taking away an inheritance or a morning gift, or of looking after a married woman.
Be ashamed of desiring another's maiden or going to her bed.
Be ashamed of harming your friend – if you have given something to him, do not upbraid him.
Be ashamed of repeating everything you have heard and revealing what was entrusted to you.
So will you be rightly ashamed and will find favor with and be nice to everyone.
